About Sean

Was senior online editor for BudgetTravel.com and founding editor of its blog, This Just In. Several stories I assigned and edited drew hundreds of thousands of unique visitors. During my last year, BudgetTravel.com won the gold award for the best online travel journalism site in the Oscars of U.S. travel journalism, the SATW Lowell Thomas Awards. In 2009, the site was a top-six nominee for a Webby Award in the Travel category (losing to Kayak, a travel search engine). For three years, I edited the travel blog I founded. Here’s a rundown of the posts I’m most proud of.

Budget Travel articles were often been picked up by major news portals, such as CNN.com and MSNBC.com. A couple of times these projects were featured on the top of Yahoo’s homepage. (Other Yahoo hits that I assigned and edited include “Tourist Traps We Love” and “World’s Weirdest Hotels.”)

Before that, I was on the staff of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, I wrote about 60 feature stories plus the monthly column “The Lowdown.” For my clips, click here.

Press trip policy
I have never taken any press trips, media discounts, or free gifts of travel gear intended for review, etc. I’ve been lucky enough to have steady editorial work every since I graduated from university. I don’t look down on people who have accepted rewards from travel companies they report on; in the UK, for example, it’s a standard practice; it’s just something I haven’t done.
